5 and 6 Years Old
We provide two kindergarten programs for our families to choose from. We teach the children all of the skills needed to help them advance into first grade. Half-day Program One of our programs is a wonderful compliment to the public ECC Kindergarten program. With this option, the child attends the public school and arrives, via bus, at Children of Tomorrow at lunch time. The children have lunch and then have kindergarten class the second half of the day with Children of Tomorrow. Full-day Program The second program that Children of Tomorrow offers is Full-day Kindergarten. The kindergarten day starts promptly at 9:00 and ends at 3:00. Before and after school care is an option that accompanies both of our programs as well. In both of our kindergarten programs, we cover all areas of learning. We do activities that involve: Reading and Language Arts Students will understand letter-sound relationships, learn about the likenesses and differences in letters, and begin to form letters correctly. They will understand the main idea of a story, learn how to tell a story in a sequence using beginning, middle and end, will restate or paraphrase material read to them, anticipate events in a story, and predict story outcomes. They will use pictures and symbols to convey thoughts, match words to a picture, learn to journal, and engage in group-writing projects. They will learn to write left to right, top to bottom. They will start to learn high frequency sight word vocabulary. Children will learn sense of rhyme and learn how to distinguish between fact and fiction. Children will learn to follow oral directions, use good listening habits, speak so they can be heard in an audience, ask questions related to a topic, maintain a topic of discussion and use new words in oral context. Social Studies The children will understand the importance of rules and problem solving within school, family, and community. They will recognize the American flag as a symbol of our country. They will discuss current events. Children will recognize that people have choices, that there is a difference between family needs and wants, and that family members earn a living by working. The children will understand the significance of selected holidays. The children will learn their address and phone number, identify maps and globes as pictures of the earth and develop appreciation for and the need to take care of the environment. The children will also recognize that families work, play, make rules and solve problems together. Science The children will learn to interpret information through observing, predicting, and experimentation. They will learn to identify and classify. They will distinguish that plants and animals are living things, identify and classify types and parts of plants, identify conditions for seeds and plants to grow, and sequence stages of plant growth. They will observe and record weather, name the characteristics of the four seasons and learn how they affect the environment. The children will identify some characteristics of mammals, recognize which animals hatch from eggs, and identify stages of metamorphosis. Children will recognize that people are unique, alike and different in many ways and that they change as they grow. They will identify and describe functions of external and internal body parts. They will also learn and investigate the 5 senses. The children will learn appropriate self-care habits and healthy foods, practice pedestrian, bus, auto, and playground safety, practice fire and tornado safety, understand methods to avoid child abduction, and discuss good mental health practices and good peer relationships. Math Children will manipulate objects to illustrate addition and subtraction facts through five and to illustrate equal groups (multiplication) and sharing groups (division). They will use spatial terms such as under, over, above and below. They will write numerals to 100 and count in order to 100. Children will understand more or less, match numerals to the correct sets and recognize plus, minus, and equal signs. The children will identify pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and their value. Children will compare length of objects, identify shorter and longer, estimate weight and numbers and arrange objects by size and length. Children will identify and draw circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, diamonds and crescents. They will sort objects and describe how they are sorted. Children will be able to copy, extend and create different patterns. They will describe the position, direction and opposition of objects. The children will learn to solve simple oral story problems. Art Children will express their creativity as they draw, paint, cut and paste, work with clay, and more. They will identify, describe and use lines, shapes, colors, textures, and patterns in artwork. They will create artwork using many different materials and techniques. Along with paper and pencil, there are other tools used in the learning process. Students work with and use information through the computer software programs as active participants in the learning process. These two kindergarten programs, along with teachers, parents and members of the community, teach children important life skills within a caring and consistent environment. The children will master skills in self-discipline, responsibility, good judgment and how to get along with others. The opportunities your child will be given at Children of Tomorrow will meet Minnesota State Graduation Requirements for the Kindergarten level. We send all of the necessary transcripts to the school district where your child will be entering into 1st grade.
